Part of this article explains that a group of students made their own solar powered ICE MAKER with 100 bucks worth of plumbing and a 4 by 8 foot piece of reflecting steel. It doesnt even use any electricity. It seems counterintuitive to make ice using the sun. The system uses heat rather than an electrical compressor to condense the coolant liquid. It seems like anyone living outside of the city would have enough room to make your own solar equipment.
